From what I understand (I have never actually done any hands-on experimentation), the most impractical part of an ETG/ECG is the barrel. It erodes, and often has to be changed after several shots. I am aiming to fix that. My idea is that the barrel would be made of a standard metal, but would have a thick ceramic liner. Ceramics are resistant to high temperatures, and are even being considered for use in gas turbines. They are also resistant to thermal shock, which is exactly what is required for an electrothermal barrel. Perhaps silicon carbide would work? The only problem I see is that the pressure could fracture or damage the ceramic. The metal encasement is meant to hold the ceramic together, but I'm not very well informed as to the properties of ceramics, so I don't know if a metal casing would really prevent it from fracturing.
