Hello everyone,

I've just built a simple railgun, but it wont work. Attached is the picture of it, plus the schematic.

Capacitors are electrolytic 3300uF, 50V connected in series, charged up to ~82V. That's not much energy, but the armature won't move. It doesn't even shake.
All resistors are 500k.

When fired, current does go trough armature.

Help please.

Your armature is way too large for that little power. Move the rails closer together and put a TINY bit of aluminum foil. You really need more power.

yup add more power. just look at all the other examples, what's the lowest voltage? like 300 volts. what's the lowest electrical joules? like 200 joules. so you'll need more voltage and about the same capacitance to get it to work. When you plan to do something for the first time, perhaps copy what others did with minimal changes of your own to see if you can do it. then when it works do all the modifications you want.

I'd also suggest that it may be easier to start with a coilgun rather than a railgun, I've been tinkering with my 'railgun' for over a year now, and I still haven't really got it to work as anything other than an elaborate tinfoil vaporizer.... Also, the massive currents involved mean that any semiconductor switching you do will cost an arm and a leg!
