Hi all
I'm about to buy something to activate my coilgun (spec: cap =20mF - 400Vdc only using 325Vdc on them though)
and i must say i'm a little confused what is best IGBT's or SCR's...? I imagine the peak current when "ignited" to be of some concern but then again it's only in a worst case scenario 1ms so how big of a deal is it..?
hope to get some good and educating replies as always...

it depends on your situation - if you want to try to control the pulse (e.g. adjust duration to turn it off at an optimal time) then an IGBT is better, but for a basic or high current gun an SCR is better, but once it's on you can't turn it off so if your pulse is too long for your coil/projectile combination it will reduce efficiency.

Keep in mind that SCR's for a given current rating are much cheaper than IGBT's with similar pulse ratings. As said, IGBT's allow you to turn off a pulse.

How did this turn out? I've got a bank of very similar specs, but I used some 70A or so SCRs, which got rather hot after a few shots, I'd like to see how that IGBT held up in comparison, seeing that it looked pretty apt for the job!
