Multiple stage coil gun, trigger all coils at once, then turn them off in sequence?

Lets say we have a 3 stage coil gun. Instead of triggering stage 1 and waiting for the projectile to get to some point between stages 1 and 2 before triggering stage 2, and then doing the same for stage 3, we instead started off the acceleration of the projectile by triggering all three stages at once, and then at some point (either before the projectile exits stage 1, or immediately after exiting) you disable stage 1. Once the projectile has entered stage 2, you turn that off, and finally after the projectile has entered the final stage, you turn it off as well.

With my basic understanding of coil guns and their associated electromagnetic properties, I think that this could work rather well, as it would eliminate the 'suck back' effect by having the center of the magnetic field continually moved further along the barrel until the final stage is turned off. Though I think the possibility strongly exists that keeping the last stages energized for so long could create serious energy demands and in effect actually lower efficiency..

You're quite right, the coilgun performance would turn out quite well to have the coils energized before the projectile arrived. However, you're also correct in that it would severely lower the energy conversion efficiency. The I^2R losses dissipate energy amazingly quickly when we work with kiloamp sized current. It all goes into heating the coil. Now if only we could use superconductors, lol ...
