For a few years I have been experimenting with coilguns in various forms. Reluctance coilguns gave me reasonable results (73m/s @ 20g projectile, 36000uF @ 400V) but scaled poorly. Inductance coilguns have better potential but gave me alot of problems. Quite often the projectile never left the barrel. The results other people get with thompson coils look very promising. The projectiles however have alot of surface area and can only be accelerated once. In order to overcome this problem I have come up with the following concept. I have not been able to find this design anywhere else on the internet. I have not built this design yet, I am still working out the math. If you know anyone with any information about this design please let me know. If not (c) lemmingnl :P
The attached file show the concept. The red lines are coils. The black lines surround areas of ferrite. The green line surrounds an area of copper or alumnium. The coils are fixed, the projectile is shown in the upper right corner and is traveling in that direction.
One pair of coils and the projectile form a thompson coil. This coil propels the alumnium. The ferrite on the projectile ensures that the force is pointed out of the barrel. The next set of coils then takes over.
This design should not be too difficult to machine and I am planning to test it out this month.
Does anyone have an opinion about the flaws of this design?

I'm pressed for time, so I won't get into too much detail, but you should go into the archives and find Chris' Lateral Disc Cannon (reconnection gun). It was an inductive launcher that I believe was intended to use 2 stages, and his output energy was positively insane.
He's still active on the forum on occassion. Maybe he can chime in with some details.

ferrite is useless after magnetic field rises higher than 0.3 Tesla. And it can explode if magnetic field will be rather big. You can see somewhere it in this video
