I'm planing to try to make a sliding contact coilgun, but there are a few problems I need to solve. The one I need help with is the coilwinding. Instead of winding all turns of a layer at one time (as at least I usually do) it is necessary to wind all layers of each turn at one time (or stick with just one layer) which is hard since the layers tend to slide of the previous ones.
Any ideas on how to simplify the process? If my post needs clarification, please let me know.

Sliding contacts means arcing, arcing means loss of efficiency, noise and dangerous dust particles. You should employ solid state switching instead or your contacts will erode soon

I'd like to try it anyway and the reason I wont go with only one layer, which would be easy, is to limit the possibilities of arcing and erosion of contacts.

I really like this design. So just for clarification, the moving coil will be the projectile? Or will it push the projectile in front, leaving the moving coil behind on the main device?
As far as the coil... I'd leave it as one layer. Or if you really want to use a multi-layer coil some things would have to change. You would have to wind a bunch of small coils directly next to one another. Then use a rail system so that as the moving coil goes it energizes each coil. The transition wouldn't be smooth at all between coil sections.
If the reason for wanting multiple layers is to control current, you could just use a smaller gauge wire. More turns per inch so more inductance and hence less current.
Just a thought, you could anchor the moving coil and use the secondary one as the projectile. In the paper it didn't seem like it needed connections to any outside circuitry.

Turkey9, yes the moving coil will be the projectile and I never considered a thinner wire but that's probably a very good idea. I will have to try that. I have however already bought some thicker, still thin, wire which I will try to use.
