Hey

I am currently working on a very basic rail gun.

It is powered by ten camera flash capacitors, charged by a camera flash circuit.

For the rails, I have two nails.

But the thing is, whenever I put something on the rails. Be it a peice of aluminum foil, or a small peice of a nail, or whatever,

instead of going ALONG the rails, they go up. Or, if I put it behind the rails (but still conecting) it goes backwards, or in front of the rails, it goes forwards.

This force, whatever it is, doesn't push in a particular direction, only AWAY from the rails. And it seems to be much greater than the Lorentz force (as I can't tell if my rail gun is working or not)

Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks.

What are you talking about, thats the lorentz force.
All it does is expend the current loop until it breaks.
And its probably masked by the effect of the explosions.
Here is a summary of your problems.
A, too little energy, not everything can be scaled down.
B, high resistance and ferromagnetic rails/projectiles
B, non constrained barrel, as in you need to constrain the projectile to move along the rails.

ah,

so the projectile and rails can not have iron in them?
...that makes a big differnce.

So, also, your saying that the Lorenz force isn't always applied allong the rails? It is applied in ANY direction away from the rails?

Becouse I have always read that it is due to the right hand rule, and thus only acts in a certain direction. Unlike the force that I am refering too, that causes my projectiles to jump off the rails in any random direction.

First of all, I wouldn't use nails for the rails. Unless the nails are square or some other angular shape, you would have a very small contact area with the projectile. While this may do good for friction, it won't be very good for the resistance.

To answer your question, any vertical offset of the projectile on the rails WILL cause it to go up. Electroholic is right about it being the Lorentz force. I would recommend wider (real) rails.

Well, I know that thier is no lack of power, as I just launched a BB across my room. Albiet in the wrong direction (up and across, instead of forward)

Alright, I will try a more traditional rail shape. Though I am not sure of what I have that would suffice.

a bb isnt going to work very good as a projectile, you need the current flowing in one direction through it, where in a bb it will curve to fill the entire bb, giving you forces in the wrong direction. Railguns aren't easy devices to build, at the very least you need two enclosed rectangular rails and a matching rectangular projectile, ideally made of copper, bronze, or aluminium.
