machining ferrite

has anybody had much experience with machining ferrite? Im wondering if i could buy one of those 10mm diameter rods and file/sand it down to around 7mm using a drill.

I highly doubt it will machine well (some correct me?). You should buy ferrite powder and mold it with a binder.

Supposedly it is very hard to grind and requires a lot of coolant.
