I'm having some trouble with FEMM v4.2. How do you simulate a coil with an air core and then place a iron bar inside of it. It seems as though all you can do it make a solid coil or make a coil that your looking down.

You can do it in FEMM 4.2 although the modeling diagram looks a little strange at first.
FEMM 4.2 supports an axi-symmetric model; the figure you draw is a cross section that is rotated about the axis to form circles. So you only draw one half of a coil, and one half of the projectile. The projectile must be placed along the z=0 axis to be solid, otherwise it becomes a hollow cylinder.
Use your 3d imagination to see the round object in space. Just takes a little getting used to.
