After i detonated my 2800A stud diode to dead short i began to think what else could be used as protective device. Maybe large SCR? My system uses mechanical spring loaded switch. It seems that high voltage SCR with very large pulse current capability (+30kA) is easier find than diode that size.

My thinking is that it is not the peak currents encountered, but the di/dt. The current surge rating goes up alot when time goes down. Try adding resistance to the circuit. What ever place sells SCR's are going to sell diodes that go that high.
