hey everyone.
i just found 6 capacitors(450V(500surge) 4700uf) in my drawer and thought i would use them for a coilgun.
now, my question is: is it possible to put thyristors together in "banks" for triggering my coilgun? if yes, will 10 of These 12A 800V be able to handle just one of my capacitors?

also, i have never used thyristors or SCR's before, how i i wire them up?

BTW: by putting them together i mean all cathodes together, all anodes together and all gates togeter

I've heard a lot of knowledgeable people say paralleling SCRs doesn't work, because they have slightly different turn-on times and the first one to turn on will take all the current. However, I have paralleled 2 successfully and had them work fine. Not sure what 10 would do.

Also, these SCRs are pretty small. You can get 40A rated ones in the same package if you look. I really don't know if they will work for one of your caps, but all I can say is if it were me I wouldn't try it.

those will burn. Parralleling thyristors does work, but to a limit. If you have 2 10kA surge SCR's, and parrallel them, you cant use them at 20kA. They all share current, but one gets more then the other.

Depends on your coil, ten of those can only handle around 1200amps peak so if you charge to 400v and have a 550uH coil then it will have a 1169Amp pulse for about 5mS. So technically yes. Nice Capacitors btw

Just as an aside note, putting SCR's into series also doesn't work (to increase the voltage) - because of different turn on times, eventually enough turn on that the voltage between anode and cathode exceed the breakdown voltage of the remaining SCR's, and the whole thing avalanches in one big waste of money.

oh well, i guess i wont be using those thyristors then cry )

do you have any ideas on how to do the switching?
i have a homemade relay i have been using for photoflash capacitors but mechanical switching wastes a lot of power right?

Mechanical switching isn't the most efficient in the world, but it is doable. If you spring load the contacts, you can get the switch closed during the current rise, before peak, and the losses wont be that bad. I'm using mechanical switching on my new 300V 12,000uF carbine style gun (of couse I've only fired it 180J so far... but with good results).

Link2 These SCRs are rated for 400A 10ms spike 600V. You can parallel a few and they should work.

400A for 10ms. As time gets shorter, the surge rating rises exponentially.

try something like this
Link2

they are not that expensive and have a much bigger die than those to220 ones.
One of these will happily switch your bank

If you dont really need the SCR's, i would say go for it :).
You will want to stay way back, because SCR's cany fail violently.
