My friends and I have been building a coil gun over the past few months and we have had some succes. We got a .5"x2" projectile to chip cinderblock even though we are only getting about 1-2% efficiency. We have recorded our progress in this blog. I read a lot of the threads and obviously some of you really know what's going on so if you have any tips or ideas that could get better performance they would be greatly appreciated. If you've got any questions about specifics feel free to ask and I will try to explain.

what is the input energy and what is the switch (if you dont mind, a part number or data sheet).
Is it multistage or singal stage?

The two capacitors we are using are 450V 3300uf, they are charged with a home-built charger that is adjustable and self-regulating. The switch is an SCR and on the side it says Semikron SKT 551/16E (picture). We're still working on the schematic and parts list but that might be up later tonight or some time tomorrow.

From your blog, the barrel you've chosen is brass, while it is not ferromagnetic, the large magnetic field formed when you trigger the coil will form a eddy current in the barrel causing losses.

You could cut a slit lengthwise in the brass pipe, or switch to a plastic tube.

Yes, we are planning on slotting the brass barrel to avoid eddy currents. For those of you interested in the schematic (full sized picture), we just uploaded it to the blog.
