I don't even know the formula to figure this out but...
I was following a design that was able to shoot through a coffee can using only 22 AWG wire, 30 or 20 mm wide, and 12 layers. His videos shows it works. The problem was, I didn't have much. So I ripped wire from a electromagnetic off a old motor, guessing its 24 guage maybe. Whats the best length and layers for it?
Capacitors: 400V 470uf currently testing around with 4 in parallel Barrel Diameter: Simple plastic straw...Which is what... 6.5mm or 8...

If you are actually firing 1880uF at almost 400V you should use less turns of a thicker wire
That wire actually looks like 20-22AWG compared to the IC pins.
With that combination you have about 1 ohm of coil resistance, peak current less than 250A. Also, you will not be underdamped so you will most likely experience serious braking due to a ~8ms pulse(though this will make protection diode requirements easier).
If you increase wire diameter, you will need to choose a stronger barrel.

Yeah just keep in mind that the coil in the back there, is just junk wire. like not much. I was going to buy maybe 20 guage, and build what the tutorial said. I guess the guy just used 4, 400V 470 uf capacitors, a straw-diameter inner core, outer core was just 30mm wide, 12 layers. and he filmed a video if it doing 5 inches away, shooting into a coffee can. -- Currently my set goal.
