Voltage doubler

Hey all,

My caps have a working voltage of 400v. I am charging them with an inverter which puts out 230v AC then a voltage doubler. My voltage doubler puts out 560v DC when I measure it with my multimeter. My question is . . . HOW is that even possible?? And how can I restrict the output to 400v preferably without affecting the charge time? The person who says disconnect when the caps reach 400v gets a kick in the bum. tongue

Use a feedback system which stops the charging when it reaches 400. use a voltage divider to output around .6 volts to a 2n3904 and a small ceramic capacitor attached to ground, then use the 3904 to shut of power to the inverter. you could power a small relay with the 3904 which would disconnect power from the inverter

Thanks mate.

I just charged my cap bank completely for the first time. It takes ages to reach 300v, and ages more to reach 350v. I think ill use your idea to turn on an LED once it reaches 350v. It would take years to go from 350 to past 400v.

What size caps are you using in your doubler? If they are small, your power input will be low, and so your charging speed will be slow too.

They are 100uF caps. Do you reckon it would help if I put some in parallel?

Hmmm, no 100uF should be plenty. Infact, I think 100uF is too much for a 60Hz 20A breaker. Are you sure they arent 100nF?

How big are you load capacitors that you are charging?
