I was considering working on making a coil gun with a friend, of mine, and in considering things to try out, we were wanting to vacuum pot the coil in epoxy for added strength, and that started some 'what ifs'

What if we used a metal filled epoxy such as JB weld to pot the coil, and use external Iron to boost the strength of the field?

JB weld Resin is 10-20% by weight Iron powder. In the past Ive successfully thinned JB weld with 99% Isopropyl Alchol and had it cure fully, so that wouldnt be an issue.

5-10% of the final weight being iron powder does seem pretty low, but no reason I couldnt up that if it would help. Ive found some 325 mesh iron powder online that I could use to bring up the iron content.

And also, for the external iron, could I use a epoxy/iron powder mixture that has a lot of iron powder compared to the epoxy, Like just enough epoxy to bond the iron together?
Or, I could use some transformer steel to make external iron, and pot that all in the iron filled epoxy to secure it and add more iron.

If no one else as experimented with this before, I guess I can make up 2 identical coils and compare their performance with various treatments. Not like the second one would go to waste, just make it a second stage later ;)

EDIT:

Composite external iron has been experimented with before,
http://www.coilgun.eclipse.co.uk/enhanced_flux_linkage_experiments.html

but nothing that Ive found yet on potting the coil.

I'm not sure anyone could give you a "this will/wont work" because of the many different ways you could do it.

But you would probably find it easier and cheaper to use epoxies like I have used for fiberglass. I have dealt with this company a few times and can recommend them: Link2

They also have fillers.

Let us know how you end up doing it and the results =)

Thanks, that looks really good, prices on the resins are better then I had seen elsewhere. all the epoxies Ive mangaed to find are $100+ per gallon, definitely a bit more then I'm looking to pay for a gallon. :p Plus that red/black kevlar/carbonfiber sheet looks interesting cheesey
