the wire with just an enamel coating is called 'magnet wire' or 'bell wire', and gives the best efficiency. You can usually find it pretty cheep on ebay, which is probably your best bet. Another option is to go down to the local home depot/lowes/osh/etc and pick up a spool of #12 wire (generally solid is recommended, but stranded should work just as well); the thicker insulation will reduce the magnetic field slightly, but for the larger diameter wires the effect is not as large as with smaller guns.

I used romex wire for my coil and it works marvelously. Of course I had to split the whole length of romex down the middle and fish out the single conductor. It wasn't too hard though, and for something free, well....

What is romex wire? I think you are talking about that 2 part wire that you can split down the middle into two wires but I am unsure if thats what you meant.

Romex wire is 2 or 3 insulated wires (generally solid #14 or #12 but you can get it up to #6) with an uninsulated #14 'ground' lead, inside of a plastic shell. They also sell it at home depot, etc. The white stuff is #14 main conductors, the yelllow is #12, orange is #10 etc etc
