Hi, I'm new to this site and like it very much. Since this is my first thread I thought that it would be interesting to hear about where some of you get electronics components. I do a lot of electronics salvaging and am wondering where I could get dead or excess electronics for free or a very small price. I have taken apart microwaves, televisions, computer psu's etc... What I mostly want is magnet wire, large value capacitors, and other high voltage equipment for many of my high voltage projects. I make coilguns, jacobs ladders, resonant mot HV power supplies and much much more. So if you guys know a good source for broken or salvageable electronics I would be very happy to here about them.

Welcome to the forum! Well you can make high voltage capacitors from transparencies, which are sturdy and easy to make, cheap, and will work for tesla coils and stuff like that Link2 .

This is a tesla coil using an ignition coil from a car and one of the caps mentioned above Link2 .

Microwave ovens are probably the best place to get magnet wire from thrown away stuff. The fan that is used to cool the magnetron, has a few hundred feet of magnet wire, conveniently on a spool :P. All you have do is either cut the metal core apart with a dremel or angle grinder, or take the screws or rivets or whatever is holding the core together out, and 'peel' the metal apart that is connected to the spool. You can also find this kind of fan in some small personal fans, the fan from a small heater, and i have heard someone get wire out of a ceiling fan. I used the magnet wire from a small personal fan to wind a tesla coil that is 11 inches by 2 inches. I used only the wire from one fan too..

A good source would be freecycle, craigslist, and the curb for free electronics. Otherwise, in order:

Magnet wire: motors, disassembled transformers (by boiling/acetone/DCM)
Caps: For anything under 100V, try stereos or maybe car chargers (as in large car battery chargers). For higher voltage (400-500v) you would be insanely hard pressed to find them for free, but many industrial salvage/junk places will have them cheap.

Your best overall bet is to go to a electronics/industrial salvage place, you might have luck posting where you live (city wise) as people in your area may have more specific store listings.
