Well, I've got a lot of camera charging units now and I'm ready to start building a more powerful capacitor bank to drive my coil gun.
I've wondered that if I connect two or more 100 volt output from the camera charging unit in parralel (Capacitor not attached) would I get double the speed to charge the capacitor. If I have hooked the camera charging unit in series, would I get double the voltage across my output end?
Also, to make the capactior bank able to put out about somewhere between the 80 to 100 Joules of energy, what type of capacitor would you recommend.

if you were to connect the outputs in series, you could theoretically get double the voltage, but it depends if the components in the drivers can take the higher voltage.. and I have driven them in parallel with no problems, I don't see how any could arise. as for the capacitors I cannot recall, but someone here will know.

I put 16 of the caps in parallel, and it worked wonderfully. 60J @ 300V makes quite a bank when shorted. It was enough energy to completely vaporise a small piece of Al foil.

amazing what disposable cameras can do... also, if you wanted to, you could use the camera circuitry for triggering too (assuming this is a single stage, and also there are better ways but it is a good test of the rig as the mod needed on the camera is quick and easy) just bend the flash tube out enough to make the coil bridge it and when the flash is triggered by the camera (shorting the shutter wires) the tube will fire from the trigger transformer and send the caps to the coil. for running parallel caps (series is different) just solder the second tubes connections to the corresponding connections on the other tube [they have to be identical unless you make sure polarity etc is correct). you don' have to short the second flash circuit when firing.
