I am new to coilgun building. I made a coilgun out of a disposable camera and I wanted to try something more advanced, so I have been researching how to build a better one using this forum and various websites (thanks everyone by the way).

My specific question deals with the IGBT in a boost converter circuit.

I simulated (in PSpice) the boost converter circuit (from another coil gun's website: Link2 with a few minor changes: 150mH inductor L2, 15VDC power to L2, and it worked fine. When I constructed the boost circuit, it works and charges the cap bank (2200uF @ 300VDC), but the IGBT gets real hot and will burn out.

When I ordered the parts from Digikey, I had to find a few equivalent parts due to availability and the part cost. (I guess they were low on stock at the time I ordered.)

The different parts: RURG8060 diode (D2), and a STGW30NC60VD IGBT (Q1).

I added a TVS diode (P6KE440A) from C to E in reverse bias, like I read in one of the threads saying it should decrease the temperature on the IGBT, but unfortunately it didn’t seem to do anything for the temperature.

I am assuming the IGBT is my problem. Looking at the spec sheet I thought that the IGBT would have been good enough, but apparently not... The major differences I noticed was that the one I am using (STGW30NC60VD) has an internal reverse bias diode, and the frequency was up to 50kHz, 600V 40A, and the one ACG (Fairchild FCB40N6S2) had listed has no internal diode and can take a higher frequency range, 100kHz @390V, 24A to 200kHZ @ 390V, 18A. Is the lower frequency range why my IGBT keeps burns out? Or is it something else entirely?

I wanted some advice before I ordered more parts.

Thanks in advance.

I suspect the frequency isn't set properly, also the duty cycle needs to be set properly. Another problem is that the IGBT isn't driven properly, so it turns slowly leading to high switching losses. use a driver between the NE555 and the IGBT
