There are some incredible forces at work in this magnetic gun. Even at low powers I could see the coil contract. After some reading I see that guys use glue on each layer to secure the coil. Any movement has to be a a waste of energy. Here is what I tried. Since my coil was already built, I applied CA glue to the outside of the coil. The very thin mixture was used and it seemed to seep in well. After the coil seemed saturated, I applied the acellerant. When the coil finally cooled down it appeared to be fairly rigid. The next day I applied a couple of coats of epoxy to the outside. Tonight I tried the coil.. Seemed to work great, so I got brave and raised the voltage to 300, then 400 volts. At 400 volts the epoxy shattered and shrapneled around the lab. The coil needs to be more rigid.
Man.. How do you guys with the really big stuff hold your coils together??? Back to the drawing board to build a tighter coil.

Use gorilla glue, or any polyurethane glue. It won't shatter like epoxy, since its SLIGHTLY flexible and not hard as rock. The harder it is, the more brittle. But just because it's not as hard doesn't mean it's not as strong. This is what I use and its a heck of a lot cheaper than gorilla glue, since it's not name brand. Its called Elmers Probond ultimate glue. You can get it as OSH or home depot, or wherever.

Hi Andy, OK I have some of that Gorrila glue. Glad to know Elmers is the same for a lot less money. That stuff works with water, or at least you need to wet one side of the 2 components being glued. I wonder if a mixture of say 50% water and 50% glue would be watery enough to soak into the coil but still harder.
