Hello everyone,

I found some old topics on the subject but I decided to create a new one to not revive those...

I have two different models which I'll build, but I'll explain the first and simpler one...

The project is basically a railgun, where the projectile is a gas or liquid flux and will have some neodymium magnets above and below the rail to increase the magnetic field.

In the simulations I'm determining the format of the output "hole" (sorry for the bad terms but not from a english speaking nation).

I need the electrodes to be the most durable possible, even if it presents a higher resistance, which material do you recommended for them?

Is there any low cost supply system capable of supplying 10kW? I'm already building a ZVS + flyback transformer + a caps bank even though it won't get this power, the 10kW system is just the ideal for continuous use.

I'll soon be doing a concept prototype to test parameters, very simple and crude, from that I'll certainly find some anwsers and some new questions wink

Thanks everyone
Carlos

I imagine High temperature conductive graphite might work well:

Look mid way down.

The resistance may be too high. In my railgun, it worked great corrosion wise, but the resistance caused it to break up (much of the energy was left in the cap bank):

I don't know what the coloring is. I think some (the shiny specks) are from copper deposits, but I think the rest is from a too high temperature. Take a torch to it and see what happens.

Hard chrome plated copper-tungsten is probably the best you are going to do without getting really exotic.

As for 10 KWatt high voltage PSU ... a pole pig or parallel MOTs? A SMPS could do it at a fraction of the weight and size, but not trivial.

Thank you for the reply, I've been reading your blog for some time now,

I had thought of using graphite, do you have any time of data of its resistance?
What is the material you used for the external body?

Sorry, I do not. It is not expensive, so it is worth a shot.

The body is G11 Garolite. If you can afford it, go Macor ceramic (A machinable ceramic).

Thanks for the suggestion about the copper tungsten, I'm already after it!

The idea is to build a 10Hz pulsed thruster with approx 1KJ each. I've never build a power supply over 200W so I lack the experience with this type of system. the biggest problem will be finding a transformer that can withstand this power.

As I said, pole pigs or parallel Microwave Oven Transformers (the one I linked is obviously a bit expensive, but you get the idea).
