Instrument Sound Replication

I was trying to code something to send a PWM signal to a speaker to try to replicate the sound of different instruments.

Can anyone here help me with this? I know it involves the wave equation but it confuses the heck out of me, despite my somehow passing the test on it last semester.
Would I really need to program the wave formula, filling in the constants with the specifications of a real instrument, or is there some kind of simplification I can use to just slap together a simple formula incorporating some overtones unique to that particular instrument? How do the people who design electronic keyboards do it?

There are many ways to do it, subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, wavetable and so on. There's a lot more info here Link2 .

Start from the bottom of this page Link2 and read up, it's the best source I've found on how synthesizers really work and how they are implemented.

Thanks a lot!

My goal is to just use one cheap programmable microchip to take in the signals and output the proper waveform... now I can gain a clue!

Very helpful so far... but it looks like a long night of reading is ahead of me.

If you remember back that far there was a program
written in BASIC called birdsong back when all there was
as a peeper of a speaker in 8080 machines. That might
show some tricks to timbre rendition. Also gander at Helmholtz
Sensations of Tone..
