Limiting current (apart from a resistor that is...)

In my cap bank (see Link2, I've managed to keep the impedance very low to the extend that my Pearson Current Monitors (a 410 & a 411) both reckon that my peak current is 2000+A (actually, at the moment I can't measure it as its too large).

Are there practical ways of limiting these sorts of currents dynamically, or should I just introduce a small high power resistor or series inductance - which seems odd after having gone to so much trouble to produce something with such low impedance.

With only 100V on the cap bank it is throwing a disc platter about 20 ft. I wouldn't want to be near it if it was fully charged.... I'm worried if I up the voltage my bricks will detonate...

Cheers

How about some series inductance?
The 'launch' coil will 'look' like inductance with resistance
so say 10% of the launch coil inductance? (I've no idea !)

The most obvious solution (to me) would be to reduce the cap bank size.

Why not a higher inductance launch pad? Why bother upping the voltage at all if you're just going to waste power in a resistor? Higher voltage and a lighter load will help efficiency and effectiveness, like it does in power distribution.

Is it possible to make a cheap superconducting quench path?

I wouldn't even introduce a "resistor". Why not just make the bussbars out of aluminum? That should slow things down a little.

dI/dT profile when I have a choke in place - still showing 250A/uS and well in excess of 2500A peak...

]wt-1_launch_pad_di_dt_profile.pdf[/file]

I have one 6700A peak brick - I might switch to that... Tried launching with 300V and shattered the launch pad acrylic...

Cheers
