I have been doing alot of reading over the past few weeks in order to make a 2kj 2 stage coil gun. current plan is x2 450v 12000uf Computer Grade Bus Capacitor. 1 per stage. i will be constructing the uzzors charging circuit since i have read good things about it on this forum. coil will be based off of this design with modifications to accomidate my particular setup. it will be optically triggered to activate the second stage. i will be using a more than capable scr that has yet to be determined. now for some noob questions i am sry, but i am learnin alot of this forum. there are a ton of crazy smart people and awsomes designs on this site!
1) what would you recomend me to use. a modified flyback transformer or a dc/dc converter to step my voltage to 400v (it will most likly be powered by a 3s2p lipo)
2) should i use two diffrent capacity capacitors or adjust my coil for the second stage?
3) should the stages be close togther or can they be spaced out?
4) ahould i use 12 or 10 guage magnet wire
i have alot more questions, but these are a start.

This is what I would do: 1) Modified flyback... this means a flyback core with a new secondary and a new primary... this works great if you drive it with a ZVS (Mazilli) driver. 2) I'd adjust your coil because it is much easier to tweak coil values than to tweak capacitance. 3)the closer together they are, the less velocity is lost due to friction between the stages. 4)I think 12 gauge wire should be fine and it will allow you to get a tighter coil which will increase preformance. It will also be a lot easier to work with. For that matter, 14 gauge should also work just fine; I think that's what the guy who made anothercoilgunsite used.
