A railgun of what you are considering is quite an undertaking, and takes time, money, and machining facilities. Badastronaut made one (can't find the link, best hobbyist one in my opinion), and I made one too:
Link2

Start with a coilgun (check barry's coilgun, info site). The car audio capacitor won't work, you need a higher voltage with less capacitance, with a bit of pulse handling capability.

steve: Are you saying 1 ohm as that is too much or too little?

Since The capacitor clearly won't work for a short high current pulse, would it work as a long relatively low (~15A) current? Therefore, if it does, could it be used for a circular accelerator? - so in effect there would be a slow acceleration which would decrease until the capacitor has too low energy levels.

If that it also impractical, then can anyone think of another experiment involving this high capacitance and low voltage?

Would these capacitors be suitable?

Link2

Also, would these be in series or parallel to achieve 5000uF at 400V ?

You want is something like this: Link2 a computer grade capacitor, usually identifyable by the screw terminals and large size. They have the low ESR, current handling, voltage capability and energy storage required. Those ones are probably useless due to ESR and most likely will be killed by the high current surge. If you want a small, mini railgun, people have used photoflash capacitors with success: Link2

When you put capacitors in parallel you add the capacitance. When you put them in series, you increase the voltage capability but decrease the capacitance. Look here: Link2

This one looks very promising : Link2

@GhostNull ( or Ken ),
Thanks for all of your comments, they have all been helpful and informative cheesey

To everyone else, sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I came here to fix that tongue

Those capacitors are fantastic. The postage on that is outrageous, but it a ok price.

This is a good one: Link2
if they ship international.
If you find a good one in the US, I can help you out and forward it to you.

I have just asked if they ship internationally, if they don't how much would it cost for you to forward the capacitor to the UK? (and thanks for the offer!)

Pleasure to be of assistance =)

eBay isn't always the cheapest. Rob, a fellow coilgunner often sells some capacitors for a good price: Link2 He is trustworthy, I've bought from him before, . Also take a look at surplus sites, Link2 awhile ago they were selling some 2400uF 350v Computer Grades for $5 ea. but their all gone now =( they might be selling some different ones so check it out once and then. There are also plenty of other surplus sites. So if you want to save some money, do some good searching around and you'll be rewarded.

Good luck parts hunting!
