Hi all.
Just noticed something interesting.
Upon striking an arc using ccfl inverter from one data pin to the case of a dead PIC 12C508 I noticed that it was possible to "etch" away the casing leaving a hole where the epoxy was carbonised.
You would expect the chip to be absolutely fried to a crisp but my meter suggests that the data pins are intact and measure near identical voltage drops to Vcc and Gnd as before it was cooked.
I also tried removing the remaining epoxy with a UV laser and this might offer a less damaging option than the HV for that last millimetre.

Obviously to prevent the chip being nuked you need to ground all pins with copper, just to make sure I'd also add a guard rail to prevent the current path intersecting the silicon.

any ideas?
regards, -A

perhaps a 1kT nuclear weapon would do less damage then the hammer method. dead

We have a post here somewhere describing a professional method of burning though an IC package using single drops of fuming nitric acid alternating with acetone washes.

Ah, here it is Link2

he was inpatient, if he torched it long enough, the casing would have gone in piece, he decided to hammer it.
besides i posted it to show that you can actually torch the casing off!

oh, ok, nitric acid sounds better.
