I just then pulled apart an ancient microwave to find many bits and bobs that i wasn't sure of. can anyone identify these parts? also its the first microwave Ive ever seen that the secondary is epoxy coated, the whole transformer also has some sort of enamel coating, and the capacitor is enormous! it is only rated 600W output. draws 5.9amps. the primary has a tap for 240v, 220v, 120v, 0v, and then two more labelled brown and black. my guess for the larger black thing (in pics 3,4,5) is that maybe it could be a over current cutout or something it has written on it - ZV6K0I4AD as for the other two i'm not sure. and the little black thing in the tube (Pic 6) was labelled ZNR K471 9_9. and the strange little thing in the last pictures was screwed to the top of the microwave above the cooking cavity.

The black thing with the coil might be a mechanical HV rectifier, the coil is supplied with mains voltage and operates a switch at the mains frequency. At least thats what I remember reading of

The coil is connected to the front panel board. and then 2 contacts either side on top are connected to the HV side of the setup. what would be the use of that kind of rectifier if theres a diode as well?

7 looks like thermal switch - possibly to provide an on/off duty cycle to controle power. The thing with the coil looks like a vacuum relay - not sure why they would use this - maybe to discharge he cap when powered down. Or (in conjunction with thermal switch) to delay application of HV until the magnetron filament is hot.

There were actually plenty of thermal switches in place, like these - and as for the relay theory, if i slowly turned up voltage to the coil, i could test if the current on either side flows at some point? i don't know the voltage of the MOT but the capacitor gives the loudest bang when discharged Ive ever heard from a MOC. its only .9uf too...
