So, I've used a pair of HGTG27N120BN IGBT:s (20 ns, 1200V, 72 A, 215 Apulse) to make a standard ZVS driver, all other components in accordance to the original Mazzilli scheeme. The problem is, I keep blowing my protective diodes for the IGBT:s. I replace the diodes and the circuit works fine again utill I try to draw another arc. These are the same as I use for the feedback diodes, BYC8-600 (19 ns, 600V, 8 A, 55 Apulse).
I know these are lower rated than the IGBT:s, both in current and voltage, but should be sufficient for this circuit since I'm only feeding it 18V, and there shouldn't bee any considerable reverse current nor voltage. Or am I wrong? I have another 10 surplus diodes of the same kind to use in paralell / series, but wanted to know wich, if not both, are nessecary, and moreso why.
*edit* The diodes pop maybe a tenth of a second of drawing the arc, "teasing" the outputs of the flyback close together produces the familliar HV hissing and does nothing to harm the circuit. But as soon as it goes to full arc, the supply shorts across the destroyed diode.
