I think it all depends on the input voltage and drive topology.
Right now I'm also playing with flybacks transformers, driven in flyback mode (single low side switch) and with 12V and irfp260 works great. The arcs start at about 5cm. With 460 the arcs are far less impressive... obviously.
The back emf voltage spike is close to 200v so I'm trying to add some form of clamping. There is also the fact that this mosfets are avalanche rated, so my understanding is that occasional over voltage spikes won't kill them.
