found this on Hackaday... this is pretty neat, and demonstrates that you don't always need >20W of laser power to do neat stuff.
interestingly the same should work with a Bluray or 445nm diode with much finer focus and the ability to cut very sharp grooves in black/clear plastic.

Hi,
I'm wondering about one thing - is it technically possible to focus output from a diode array like this into a spot suitable for cutting, apart from using fiber optics or pumping yag rods at a great efficiency cost?
If possible it would make a really affordable cutting laser.

It is possible to focus it, but the spot will be a line about .25mm * 3mm. Since it an array it is a multimode beam, and instead of a pinpoint it focuses to a miniature picture of the diode faces. Because they're all in a line the focus is a line.
You could use some cylinder lenses and careful alignment, but then a fibre optic would be much easier.
Also, 808nm isn't going to cut most things. A lot of things reflect 808 very easily.
