Now here is a REALLY cool device. My boss let me take a one of their old MagStim devices that they don't produce anymore as a sort of going away gift (I know I'm lucky:)). Anyways, the device is a magnetic stimulator that is typically used for testing nerve function and it can depolarize the neurons in the brain (since this isn't the high speed mag stim I am not sure if this was meant to be used on the cerebral cortex or not) it also has some treatment ability in depression and back pain.
The machine is a BEAST, I mean it probably weighs like 70 pounds. Of course upon opening it up, where the weight comes from is quite apparent.
Here are the pics:
Front Panel
Stimulation Coil w/ Trigger button
Overview
SCR Stack
HV Transformer
2x 5.0kV 50uF Pulse Capacitors (data sheet: )
Control Electronics -- Note the two 50watt resistors for dissipating capacitor power. Before device is shutdown the knob must be turned to 0% and wait for the caps to discharge. I felt these guys after turning it off and they are quite hot as expected.
And here is a video showing me launching a piece of aluminum folded over a couple times (I had a cutout metal disc but lost it and had to improvize). Note with the disc it is much more powerful and I haven't taken it above 50-60% in house as it will damage ceiling.

Not yet, it has a lot of great parts, but I don't want to scrap it considering it is in fine working condition and a really cool demonstration device.
I wanted to do some reading on trans cranial stimulation to see if it is safe for use on the human cerebral cortex, of course any testing would be done on myself, as performing any experiments on others would be much too dangerous and make me VERY liable.
Perhaps it's best to stay away from the brain unless I know for certain it can't cause any type of damage even in misuse.
