Just got one of these (although probably available elsewhere) The nice thing about it is that it has a target function that sounds an alarm when a certain number of steps (turns) has been reached. Simply open it up and remove the hair spring on the magnet arm then put it back together and fit it to your former with tape/blu tack etc. start winding and when the number of turns you set has been reached it beeps.

or use a tape counter removed from a scrap tape deck.. these are obtainable at car boot sales, or flea markets. plus they usually have a manual reset function and work without applied electrical power unlike digital counters..

That is another way yes although they have disadvantages. Most I've seen only go up to three digits (pedometer has 5), the numbers are quite small and you have to keep checking it (no big deal admittedly) and you have to rig up a 1:1 pulley between you former and the counter whereas this just sticks straight onto the former. As for power, the pedometer comes with a watch battery, never turns off (so doesn't lose the count if you take a break) and I suspect the battery will last for years. If you want a zero cost option then a tape counter is probably the way to go though. I suspect old style cassette decks are probably getting hard to find even at car boot sales these days?

even a cheap pocket calculator can do the job.
just solder 2 wires in parallel of "=" switch and type "0+1". Every time the "=" switch is pressed or the two wires are connected togheter the count will be incremented by one; this system can also offer some extra math feature, for example this system can measure the total lenght of the wire instead of the number of turns by inserting "0+(D * 3,14)" where D is the diameter of the coilform

Here's an Archer 221 module, sold for about $6. at RadioShack. Shown hooked to a stop and srtart button-runs on a AA cell. Also is a two-speed hand wind a 5 inch wide bobbin. part of a set of 3 which includes spool horse and a 12 inch winder with layer server.[edit] pics follows
