Well, place I work at houses a lot of out of use parts and equipment in a big warehouse. I talked to my boss and he said I could have a few of the HV caps stored there. Seems like a great deal since they are still in bag. Specs are 50uF 5.0kV and a max current of 25kA.
here is the DS
Here are some pictures of the caps:
And finally a bragging picture of sorts, but I'm sure my stash is minimal to some others here :) Contents: 58 CDE942 "geek group" caps on the left, 2 large heatsinks, 400v 1uF caps sitting on the heatsinks, then some big computer grade 3300uF 400v lytics.
I'm planning on some can crushing to start, we'll see.

Cans would be a good start (been there, done that with moc's) Then maybe you can move on to one of those disk launchers. Those are things where you lay an aluminum disk on a pancake coil and launch the disk into the air. I'd imagine that would be pretty entertaining.
Once you get the easy stuff out of the way, I would push their voltage ratings and go for the grand finale with a dime compression. (remember to shield everything for safety when you do the dime compression)

These would probably make a nice railgun or wire exploder. If you charged them to 4500 volts so as to leave some room for voltage fluctuations and put all three in parallel you would have approximately 1.5kJ :)

a ross relay is what you need for your switch and a good shorting stick for safety. If it were me I would make a power supply out of two MOTs and storage bank with switch.
Careful those caps are energy storage caps and are lethal, respect should be observed

What about a switch like TDU made seen here: ?
I wouldn't short the caps directly because you might damage the wire. You should probably stick a bleeder resistor (with a RC time constant short enough to be safe but not too short to cause the resistors to dissipate a lot of power or cause the cap to discharge while you are walking to a safe location.) in parallel with the caps. Just in case the resistors fail open, you should use a shorting stick with a small, high power resistor in series with it.
