Who's more retarded - my capacitor or me?

Hello everyone,

I have a situation that really confuses me. I am using a 555 timer to drive a MOSFET as depicted in the attached picture. The load is the stuff in the red box, and the values of both the load LC circuit resonant freq. and the 555 timer freq. are the same (200kHz). I have, however, an potentiometer so that the 555 output freq. is adjustable. The capacitor I am using is an MKP X2 designed for 250V operation in mains lines filters.

Now when I power the circuit up, there is no current draw at all. And current draw stays at zero for a wide range of frequencies. I was expecting to see some frequency variable current flow.

I have tried shorting out the capacitor and this does draw current, with the air cored inductor having the effect of a really bad induction heater. I have also reduced the frequency and replaced the load with an ignition coil, which works well. So the rest of the circuit is obviously fine.

Am I just missing something critical here?

The cap charges to the DC supply voltage and no current flows. If you want a single transistor induction heater, maybe the class E circuit could work, or maybe even self-running class-C circuit.
