I am working on heating a large brick of iron/nickle for sword forging. When I put a piece of metal in the coil the current drops. Is this because the metal creates a "short" which drops the tank voltage?

I am trying various coil diameters and turns to see what works best. I have two coils, A and B, and A is larger in diameter than B. Coil A will have a higher current than B. Which heats the workpiece faster? A has a higher current, but the field is farther from the workpiece.

The more turns I have the larger surface area I can cover. The workpiece is large. However, more turns means a lower induced voltgage in the workpiece.

I am conducting some trials so I will have some empherical data, but so input from people who work in this field would help eliminate a few of the experiments.

you want to heat treat with induction or forge with induction? i guess either would depend on what happens with the steel after it gets past the curie temperature, that is if you are able to keep getting it hot.

for heat treat i wonder if you could induction heat a metal tube for a molten salt bath

......heat a metal tube for a molten salt bath

Speaking of which, has anyone made a bath of molten sodium chlorate ?

Once. I dropped a gram or two of it on the PVC floor. The concrete underneath stopped it. PVC isn't usually very flammable, but this stuff looked like a firework display.
What were you thinking of making the tube from?

No, I'm just saying this is an epic thread. "Induction heating for forging swords" I want to see where this goes.

BTW things all you website pages are blank.
