I want to build a 555 timer circuit to switch on a relay (as i don't have my SCR's yet) that would fire my second stage, now i realize i might have to take in consideration the time it takes the relay to switch on, but what i wanna know is, is if this would be in any way practical. Mainly the reason i ask is because if i use an optical switch ill most likely have to add a delay timer of some sort anyway because the only practical place to put it is right after my first stage. But im not sure so i thought id ask for advice!!!!

Provided the delay between powering the realy and it's contacts closing is less than the required overall delay it would work. The problem would (I think) be the contact bounce which can be several ms.
