Capacitor Bank?

Ive been working on a coilgun and i found my coil works best with 700 uF at 330 volts, but im going to be stepping up to 450 volts. Would i want to lower the capacitance to keep the same results I have???

Welcome to 4hv

When voltage is change the pulse will still be the same length; with the same capacitance and inductance. However it does change the pulse current according to Barry's RLC sim: Link2 . The greater current means the projectile will be accelerated faster and require a shorter pulse. Which could be acheived by lowering capacitance.

But what is the point in stepping up voltage if you want the same results?

Could you give somemore info on your specs?
Coil:
  • Inductance?
  • Resistance?

Switching; Relay, SCR, IGBT???
Pulse control?

Okay, sorry about being confusing, i wasnt thinkin quite right when i said to keep the same results (i was sleep deprived for 3 days in other words)...what i meant to ask is if i raise the voltage will i have to lower the capacitance as to not increase pulse time, which you answered for me...and my specs are

Coil:
Inductance - .723 mH (calculated)
Resistance - .537 ohms (calculated) 1.1 ohms (measured)

For switching im just using a push on push off switch until i receive the SCR's i ordered ^-^
