Speaking of big gyros, there's a possibly apocryphal tale of Paris police calling in a consultant, their equivalent of Richard Feynman, to catch the sneak-thief stealing luggage off Gare du Nord's platforms...
Consultant put a BIG motorised gyroscope in a rigid suitcase, plugged it in and spun it up. Then he left it on the platform and went for a coffee. The gendarmes soon accosted a man who could not get his large, but otherwise unremarkable suitcase to turn corners...
IIRC, the thief had a big suitcase with a 'magician's trap' that he used to scoop up any smaller case in one pounce.
(found on ze interweb, not sure of its accuracy but funny as heck)

Its not to common to actually get your hands on a running gyro but in the days of radio dynamotors it was. Even today a motor/blower from a vacuum cleaner can be difficult to rotate if it is running.
