Just found this. Ages ago I built a similar circuit using BC548's and it worked well. Main problem was getting it to consistently shift data, never could quite get that to work.

I made something like this with the parts I had on hand.

From work with ring chasers, (we used scr's) that could switch incandescent lamps for moving effect signs, somtimes a glitch started 2 rings moving around.
