I turned a computer CRT monitor into a simple oscilloscope for music visualization.
all i did was disconnect the horozontal deflection coil from the circuit board and connect it to a music source

i just made 1 today and it worked until i turn the monitor off, when i turn it back on it only automatically shuts off.
then i connect the horozontal deflection coil back to the circuit board, it displays the no-input screen normally. and i disconnected it from the circuit bord and connect it back to the sound amplifier, it works again
could it be the monitor's protection tht automatically shuts it off? do i need to add a dummy coil to the circuit board?

From what you describe, it sounds like some sort of POST (power on self test). I don't see this as a big deal. Making a coil might work, but I wouldn't know how to go about that. From what you say, I think the simplest solution would be to throw a DPDT switch in there. Crude, sure; effective, yes. If you wanted to go whole hog, you could add a relay with an RC time delay so that it will switch the wires over after a certain length of time after power on.

Find another similar monitor and remove the yoke assembly. Use that yoke H def coils as your dummy coil. Mount it inside the monitor you are using for scope-like display.
