Okay, so i want to push my XRT to the max. However, it seems i need a ballast. Just plugging it into the wall produces impressive results, and the XRT seems to be able to handle it, however it blows my breaker in 5 sec ;).
What are some good ballast ideas. Don't say salt water resistor. Not going to happen.

Even "nominal" voltage is likely to soon destroy your precious XRT by internal arcing, even if it's dunked in oil, unless the immersion is done properly with heat and vacuum.
If your real interest is x-rays, skip the arcs and sparks completely, and put some miles on your system at never more than half voltage. See threads and

Nah, it's under oil pretty good. Spent hours massaging all the bubbles out. So far i haven't had any trouble, even running it as an induction coil getting 8" sparks out.

Didn't you have a variac on the way?
I think you are running the transformer on the edge of saturation, cut the input voltage down just a bit, maybe to 100V, and the current draw should go down to probably under 0.1A with no load on the secondary.

I think it was too. Anyway, i just rigged up a 55 ohm resistor bank and it seems to work fine. I'll have to try it at 25 ohms some time. I don't dare go lower than that.
In the video attached it draws 1A. ]xformer.avi[/file]

I am not surprised the guy in the first link killed his transformer. From one of his posts:
I currently have C attached to core/frame ground
Terminal C in the picture here is the outer connection of one half of the secondary. He basically shorted half of the secondary, or even worse, if it's the half of the secondary with the floating inner connection for current measurement, half of the output voltage would appear between the inner windings of one secondary and the core.
Grenadier, how large is the gap it's arcing across?

Housebreakers are expensive and only have so many fast trips.
Consider these fuses--pennies in flea markets and will blow faster than the lag trip of breaker. they come in 30-25-20-15 and 10-6 -3 however the last three are harder to find.
