I have just built a cable to connect a HD44780 compatible display to my computer, to display various geek's messages and useless important informations with the help of JaLCDs software. But considering I will use this lcd and cable with a laptop, is there any way to draw the power for the lcd from the paralell port ?? ( I will not use backlight ) . I dont want to add an external power supply or a battery.

Easiest way to get power in a Laptop really is to tap the USB or FireWire port, thats what I did when I needed power for a fan on my laptop. Lots of power available there, even for a backlight.

Unfortunately, parallel ports nowadays are rarely 5V. Many parallel ports today are 3.3v (but 5V compatible), but they really could be anywhere. You also do not have any data output lines free to drive high to source power from... if you did, and your device took 3.3V-5V, you might've been able to do it. I would really just recommend connecting to USB for power. (...then grab a PIC and do a USB PIC :))
