Dental X-ray link to thyroid cancer

Repeated exposure to dental X-rays could increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer, according to new research.

BBC News
04 Jun 2010

The thyroid gland, in the neck, is sensitive to ionising radiation, especially in children, but the potential risk posed by dental radiography is often ignored, researchers said.

In a study of 313 cancer patients, scientists from Brighton, Cambridge and Kuwait found the chances of developing cancer rose with increasing numbers of dental X-rays.

The researchers said the idea that dental radiography is absolutely safe merits further examination due to their findings.

They argued that their study drew attention to concerns that dental X-rays should only be prescribed to cater for a specific clinical need, rather than as part of a routine check-up.

About 1,900 new cases of thyroid cancer are diagnosed each year in Britain and the figures more than doubled between 1975 and 2006.

The researchers, led by Dr Anjum Memon, of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, said the increasing use of sensitive diagnostic techniques does not necessarily account for the entire increase and that other causes warrant investigation.

They said the results of their work should be treated with caution because the data was based on self-reporting by the participants and comprehensive historical dental X-ray records were not available from the clinics.

Dr Memon said the findings were consistent with previous reports of increased risk of thyroid cancer in dentists, dental assistants and X-ray workers, suggesting that frequent low-dose exposures in adults may be significant.

Dental X-rays have also been linked with an increased risk of brain and salivary gland tumours, he added.

He said: "The public health and clinical implications of these findings are particularly relevant in the light of increases in the incidence of thyroid cancer in many countries over the past 30 years."

The research was funded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and was administered by the Kuwait University Research Grant Administration.

Thank god i never go to the dentist? Now, where do i buy dentures? Good ones. They make em with NdFeB magnet mounts now, and space-age ceramics, yeah? Or just damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-dont? Cancer Vs. Cavities?

Anyone else had the thought that we should just prevent the 2nd set of teeth from forming and give everyone dentures? Or, whatever happened to that vaccine against tooth decay?

It's the 21st f*cking century and we still wipe with paper and scrub our teeth with frayed twigs ("oh, but theyre plastic now!1!1!") F*ck flying cars, jetpacks, maglev trains, AND Fusion Power.

Where's the advancements in the important stuff?

Fluoride?

No, something that actually eliminates tooth decay. Not something that just makes the water taste funny (and MIGHT help if you brush 3 times a day, floss twice, visit the hygienist 4 times a year and the actual dentist twice a year......whats the point of the fluoride again?)

I reckon they should be able to trigger growth of new teeth.
Is anyone looking into it?

I'd have all mine removed and grow a new set cheesey

I posted this news piece not so much to protest the shortcomings of NHS dentistry - my avatar does that each time I post smile- but to raise awareness among forum members of the cumulative hazard of dental X-ray tubes, which seem the most popular type in amateur use.

read an article somewhere about using light to kill some mouth bacteria (470nm comes to mind) and it might work.

seems to me that the biggest problem is actually getting to the bugs, perhaps someone should make a Blu-ray laser based tooth cleaner that "nukes" the calculus automagically by focussing on the area of interest using a small camera, accelerometer and X/Y/Z axis galvo.

Laser dentistry is all the rage in private dental practice now, with as many applications as there are figures before the decimal point in the tooth-pullers' annual takings.
