I luckily have free access to a nice laser cutter, so did some playing.
Using SolidEdge to generate the DXF files for the cutter was very easy (once you get the hang of it).
Just for fun, I knocked up a 105mm mini primary with spiralling notches & strike rail - by playing with SE's variables & programming features (block stepping etc), I can just set parameters (#turns, primary/tube diameter, material thickness etc.) and it generates a set of drawings to that spec. Took about 1 hour in SE and 10 minutes to cut from 5mm frosted acrylic. Now its set up, each variation takes a few minutes to change. I'll be changing the way I fix the primary in place too - next run I'll make a clamp for each leg that'll be joined so it'll look as if the tube is threaded through the former. Each leg has a tab that fits into a "bronzed" base plate with leds etc. (also done in SE and driven by the same variables). The strike rail earth and primary start will also have a route cut for them next time.
The drawing you can see looks complicated/noisy only because its the version for the cutter, i.e. is compacted to not waste too much acrylic when cutting and has all the stepping - the working version has only two objects - a single programmable support leg & single support ring - it all fits easily in an A3 sheet, though the cutter will take A2 and bigger (up to 1cm thick too). The working version is much more spread out and is in SE native format. The centre of each support ring will also be cut to be used as shims to raise/lower the secondary and to provide secondary support.
I'm going to have fun with this! (this one is 105mm diameter, 6mm tube, 9 turns with 6mm inter-winding spacing)
