I've just built a little demonstration SSTC. Here is its story:
- IR2153 driven - half bridge of STGW30NC60W IGBTs - 230 V full rectifyed input - 25 cm long secondary with Fres around 194 kHz - up to 20 cm streamers (enough for a demonstration coil), but full CW
The Fres can be lowered more with a little toroid. Lower resonant frequency of the secondary = better stability of the discharge when different objects are getting near the topload.
The schema is not original, I took it from here (thanx danyk):

A few construction pics:
- cooling fans for the bridge, the switches, low voltage xfrm and the mains filter:
- instaling the bridge and the driver:
- manual winding of 1700 turns with 0.09 mm wire on a 11 cm diameter PVC pipe (bleah..)
- the wire was to thin to solder so I used some alu tape:
- varnishing and drying the secondary:
- making the terminal caps from veroboard after removing the copper layer:
- the primary is put in place:
- the whole thing:
The results:
-without toroid:

-with a little toroid hoter arcs:
