Hi everybody,
I just got a job working for my school on some engineering projects over the summer. I've been told to investigate building an amateur radio transmitter for relaying video and control signals between a car and remote operator. I am currently studying to get my ham license but I was hoping to get some input on the entire idea while I prepared.

This year I have been 'dabbling' in the GHz region and my sincere advice to you is don't even consider homebrew ! (other than connecting pre-manufactured modules together etc.) If nothing else, how will you know that you're not generating out-of-band signals?

For the video part I would start with a "wireless video" search on eBay.
For the control; - hobby RC - modem - pair of cheap handheld vhf or uhf transceivers - modem - audio channel of a video/audio wireless link with modems. - cheap/used CB transceivers etc........
I lost a Jintong (3W) and now have a Puxing PX777 (5W and better features) both from eBay and I can recommend both as good cheap fm transceivers.

Amateur radio transmissions are subject to content regulations. Also be sure the remote operations are within regulations. Good luck on the ham ticket study.

How crazy would it be to attempt HSMM on 70cm using a transverter? Is it conceivable? What would it take?
From what I have been reading here:
it sounds like we're on the brink. Anyone have some guiding advice if I was perhaps interested in working on that?
We are also thinking about employing something like eQSO to be able to access repeaters and transmit remotely. I am trying to imagine ways we could kludge something for the kind of data rates we'll be looking at... btw the data rates are at around 100kbs...
