My husband is in Iraq I dont know what to do...
Well heres the situation, my neighbors have some sort of contraption in there attic of there home 30 feet away. for a few weeks I watched them unload REALLY OLD tube televisions and take them in there home. The televisions never came out. After a few days I start hearing weird high frequency sounds, and tingling feeling of when an old television would be on.. I remember from my grandmas house when I was little same sound.. One day I even saw this neighbor from my back window holding in the air a large mabe 2 ft x 2 ft sheet of galvanized steal and it made this weird sound. He didnt see me wathcing One of my friends even brought it to my attention, she asked what that sound was in my home. I didnt tell her about if but she could hear it and feel it. What could they have done with those televisions??. It keeps me up at night when my eyes close I see lights flashing and my inner ears burn. I thought Im gong crazy. I called all kinds of people out to do testing, went to every Doctor known to man. Well if my friend could hear it then and I didnt even tell her about it then I know Im not going crazy. I need something to either find where the sound is entering my home, AND I need something to do something to them so it will drive them out of there home like cockroaches.. Can you come up with something that can go about 50-70 feet? or Reflect it PLEASE respond Thanks

I used to get tingly feelings and be able to give other people small shocks when I walked under power lines. We lived right next to some real hv lines. Are you living next to Wayne Szalinski?

Might be a silly question, but have you talked to them about it? They might not even be aware that there is a problem they may be causing.

When i first bought the home yeah we used to say hi/bye, then after I accidentally spraying there car with a hose a I was washing mine on the street its been a verbal war since. These people are always making verbal threats that have been documented and Police wont do nothing unless its something you can ACTUALLY HEAR, even thou Ive set up DB that read 68 at midnight.. which doesnt really prove a thing. Cops want actual prof they can see or hear. .. and its self controlled. Ive parked my car a few blocks away and sneaked into my home all lights off the whole night, just to see if the sound would come.. and of course it didnt, but when they know im home about 20-30 minutes later here comes this weird noise like those old televisions and my hair on my head would stand up at night like static

I have a question.. do you have any speakers in your house? if so, do they crackle or somehow respond when this noise is made, or the symptoms are shown?

also, have you tried talking to other nieghbors? do they have the same problem as you?

So you saw your neighbour take some TVs into his house and holding a piece of steel, now you think he`s trying to kill you with a directed energy weapon? You`ve been sneaking around your house in the dark, spying on him and now you want to drive him out of his home? Perhaps he restores tube tellies and your ioniser is broken.

Ok Sandra you didn't come here to get told you've become totally paranoid, so how can we help you? One does not build HF energy weapons by ripping television sets apart. Talking to them does not appear to be an option. You should be worried when they start bringing in microwave ovens, rectangular tubes and horns because that is what it takes for serious guiding and focussing of shorter wavelength radiation. The only harmful thing that can be done with 30-40 kV high voltage is driving x-ray tubes. If there is no concrete wall between you and your neighbours, you can give things a try with a sensitive geiger counter. Now for something to calm down a little:
these old televisions are really loud, it is just the elderly that can no longer hear the distinct 15.6 kHz noise. You can buy fluorescent screens to check for ionising radiation. You need to completely darken the room and wait for your eyes to adapt to the darkness, then hold the sheet agains different spots on the wall or ceiling (I didn't get where your neighbours are located) and check for a feint greenish glow. if you've found something and want to be sure, you can put a metal object between the wall and the fluorescent screen. If you see a shadow of the object while still in complete darkness get out of the room and have some forensic investigators check on that. Anything else done with low energy electromagnetic radiation cannot do much harm other than putting you under stress. Even a few watts of emitted microwave radiation cannot cause noticable short term effects, especially because the signal strength decays by one over the square distance from the source if it's not focussed.
Try wearing ear plugs for some nights if the noise keeps you from falling asleep and see if it helps. As for "feeling electrified" by static electricity there is nothing to be afraid of. The fields generated by undressing a fleece pullover are larger than anything you could install between the walls or on someone's ceiling by orders of magnitude. Just relax. There's a good chance these guys are just turning on the television so they don't have to hear sounds from your house because they get annoyed by that. If you are afraid that they are trying to cook you with microwave radiation, you can get a pair of good digital thermometers, a styrofoam box and two PP bottles filled with water. You then insert the thermometer heads into the bottles, close them and put the bottles inside the styrofoam box with a spacer (fleece, another sheet of styrofoam) between them. What you have built is a differential bolometer. let it rest for some hours, then set it up next to he wall with one bottle facing the wall and the other facing you. read the meters every 10 min or so and observe the temperature changes. Don't have any other heating turned on in the room or lights that could warm the box unevenly. You only have to be concerned when you rotate the styrofoam box by 180° after 1-2 hours and the temperature difference between the meters goes the other way (allow for 10min of settling because you may have stirred up the water). The bolometer is a very simple model for human tissue. Any incident radiation will be significantly absorbed by the water in the bottle facing the radiation source, for this it need so be thicker than 2 inches). Without further experience that's about as much as you can do.

Remember, this is a scientific forum, and as such, you should be willing to consider all the possibilities -- this includes admitting that your own senses are only human and fallible. Definitely do some research to find out more about what is going on before coming to any conclusions. Your neighbors may seem like the most likely suspects, but there are a number of mental, physical, and environmental conditions that could be at fault.

It keeps me up at night when my eyes close I see lights flashing and my inner ears burn.

The symptoms you are describing cannot be directly produced by high frequency sound or RF radiation. As difficult as it may be to accept, the most likely explanation is that you are suffering from extreme stress which is manifesting as perceived physical symptoms. Of course, we are not doctors, and you should certainly verify this with your own physician.

If you and others are troubled by high frequency sounds, the best thing to do would be to get a high quality recording at a time when the sound is present, and post it here. You'll want to locate a high quality microphone, and record at the highest possible quality on your computer, paying special attention to the sample rate. Good human hearing can hear sounds as high as 20kHz, so you'll want to record at a sample rate of at least 48kHz, so that we can have a look at the entire spectrum from 0-24kHz. Make sure your house is as quiet as possible while you record, with absolutely no unnecessary appliances running, and record several continuous minutes worth of audio. If you can do that, it will provide valuable data about how to mitigate the effects of the noise, and will quite probably give some valuable insights into how the noise is being generated.

In the meantime, definitely look into a set of earplugs. Good quality foam earplugs will reduce even fairly loud high frequency sounds to inaudible levels.

Thanks Chris, I might have sounded a bit too dramatic because I fancy the technical solutions to satisfy curiosity. However, as this is an electronics and science forum, a little bit of background won't hurt. The most important thing is to be well-informed and I reckon the internet is still free to use smile

How do know these are really old tube tvs? Where have you seen such tv sets before. By tube, do you mean the sets are not the flat screen tv sets that are used today?

Someething you can do, is get a small transistor radio, (one with short wave would be better), use this radio by listening to the noise it makes in various places around your home while NOT tuned to a station. When you get familiar with the characteristic sounds, you might want to record the sounds, noting date and time.

Then poke around the ARRL or other HAM radio sites under the search --QRM and QRN noise identification.

Ham radio operators currently are very concerned with various signals intefering with communications, and may be able to help you. Your local police cannot deal with this usually, but properly notified, the FCC sure can.
