Researchers have taught a computer to find regularities in the natural world that represent natural laws -- without any prior scientific knowledge on the part of the computer. Link2

Actually, most equations describing the workings of the universe are quite simple. It's that 'elegance' theorist talk about when describing their latest mathematical gem. So I wondered once if there might be some fruitful way to formulate all possible mathematical descriptions of the universe up to some level of complexity chosen as the 'limit of elegance' and then filter out the duff ones. I can't say I've thought about it very deeply, but even E=MC^2 looks simple on the face of. Their could be similar simple equations virtually sitting there in front of us that we might not discover for centuries in the normal course of events, but they be found quickly by this means.
I suppose the problem is that the only way to filter out the duff equations is by experimentation, and at least at first glance that makes automating the search impractical.

That's actually a very deep question. If E=MC^2 is elegant, why isn't the equation A=XY^2 equally elegant? It's mathematically identical.

Also, people say that Euler's identity is "elegant", but it doesn't seem to be particularly useful for anything. Link2

Whole books have been written on this subject, my favourite is Michael Polanyi's "Personal Knowledge". But Wikipedia also has a nice article on "mathematical beauty" Link2

Sounds interesting, but for my purposes the "elegance" of equations describing the physical world just means you wouldn't have to generate too many equations before you'd probably covered most of them, known & unknown, so the computation would be practical.

Happy birthday, by the way smile

You could say dimensional analysis is in the same vein in that its results are arrived at purely mathematically and aren`t necessarily correct plus they require a bit of intuition to start you off.

i hear that a multicore ARM chip forms the foundation of an experimental 1 billion neuron "brain" currently being built in the chip foundries in Taiwan...
saw it in "New Scientist" magazine.

EDIT:- see this
Link2

seems that silver + silicon allows the integration of memristor crossbar latches into silicon CMOS.
so the "positronic brain" may not be as far off as first thought.

You'd think that AI would be much harder but if its just an engineering problem then perhaps the first "smart chips" may be rolling off the production lines around the same time as the mythical colour flexible e-inkscreens.

interestingly, i did some back-of-the-envelope calculations a week ago before reading this article suggesting that a structure much like this using gallium in place of silver and a graphite intercalation complex similar to a Li-Ion battery would allow the creation of a highly reflective e-ink screen with fast response time.
also the device is a lot simpler and replacing gallium with gold or another metal may yield colour without altering any other property.

the interesting thing about this setup is that gallium/graphite memristors may be possible and substantially easier to fabricate than Ag:Si ones.
