This is an animatronic hand that I have been working on for the past five or so weeks, it is now completed (version 1) and it fared well in my high school state competition. I took 2nd place with this project in my state, being beat by an animatronic penguin errrr I don't like penguins now! Anyway it involves hundreds of dollars worth of stuff that was bought from Sparkfun including the servo controller, flex sensors, micro controllers, wireless bluetooth module, and other smaller things. All of these things are tied together with a lot of software to create a very cool animatronic hand that I think is just so much fun to mess with.

Congratulations on an impressive piece of work ! Could you program your system to accept keyboard input and have the servo-hand replicate ASL (American Sign Language).

When the Radio Shack Armatron came out, there was a lot of experimenting with servos to get the first generation of pre-DOS
of home computers operate the mechanical levers.

heh..
i was looking into building something like this. did you use any sort of rapid prototyping or handmake all the parts?

The system could be programmed to accept keyboard input and do that but in order for that to fully work you would need two hands mounted on individual robotic arms with a decent number of axis to move around. I had looked into making my hand do sign language but there is only a very small selection of single handed moves that it could perform like "i love you" and the well known middle finger. With lots of other sign language I found that it required moving your hand around in sequence with the other and in different places. The hand cannot move places only its fingers so if it were mounted on an arm it would simply be a matter of programming in scripts for each word. So when you type the sentence it would separate the words and search for them in a custom dictionary that would include matching scripts for moving the arm. When it finds the matching word the program will then execute the script for that word and then move on to the next word. If only I had the funding and manufacturing capability for that hmmm industrial servos......milling machine.......3d printer........

To answer Conundrums question, the hand was COMPLETELY made of handmade parts. The hand was made of silicone sealant, paper, string, and straws totaling a whopping $10 which is just amazing for what it can do. Everything else like the enclosure, hand stand (black box), glove ect... were all made by hand nothing but basic power tools (Jigsaw, power drill, ect...) and painstaking hand work.

Look at this website to find out more about the construction (I gave credit to the author of this site for coming up with this hand design).
