Hi, I saw this video today where some guy demonstrated the use of a magnetic stimulator. A device that is used to stimulate nerves e.g in the body or in the brain indirectly by magnetic fields. That is especially useful for the brain since it's difficult to put electrodes in there. As I understood it the device simply uses a capacitor charged to about 3000V and a coil to generate a magnetic pulse. In the video the man held the coil over his hand and got the muscles to contract similar to an electric shock. Then he held it over a certain position on his head and the hand reacted again. He said that's because the magnetic field stimulated the part of the brain that controls his hand. The video is here - jump to 7:30 min. It's in german.
Has anyone here ever tried to hold their hand over the coil of a coilgun or coin shrinker? How much pulse energy is necessary to get the muscles to react? BTW. The guy also said incorrect use of the device can cause seizures so don't try it on your head!

I have read about magnets being used to control the brain, if I remember correctly the problem was that the feilds requires were jusst so dangerously big...
The video might be neat, but the link seems broken, I just get a prompt to download a 103byte file with a .rmg1=2 exension

Can you provide any more links? (I don't have the kind of connection for watching movies.)
Affecting the brain with magnetic fields is TMS. It has applications in real science as well as in pseudoscience so research with care.
Also, I trust that no-one on this board would be stupid enough to try any personal TMS experiments. Professional TMS is done with trained attendants as it can go wrong. You can find websites where people wire strange things to their heads and feel funny, but then you can also find websites where people smoke/inject/swallow things and feel equally, or more, funny. Yes, this is an implicit mod warning.

I have heard of magnetic stimulation of the brain. According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autistic_savant savant like skills can be developed in normal people. Sounds pretty darn cool
